Scientists are the new rock stars. The infection has been contained for nearly three months, and the world is celebrating. But humans are still dying. Rebekah Taylor has seen it firsthand. Her husband was killed right in front of her by the very creatures that humans were told they no longer had to fear.

Rebekah is determined to find out who is responsible for the death of her husband and the obvious cover-up. Fueled with revenge, she begins to find answers that lead to one frightening conclusion. The apocalypse might be over, but the battles are just beginning.

Excerpt #1

I sat in the passenger seat horrified, but I didn’t dare drag my gaze away. The world had been told zombies no longer threatened human existence. Yet I was staring at an onslaught of them taking slow, deliberate steps toward our vehicle. We had barely pulled into our driveway when the horde descended out of nowhere.
I managed to slide my fingers along the door to the electric lock. I didn’t know why I thought that would save us. The undead had never let a lock deter them before. I looked around our house and it looked untouched. These creatures were only in our yard, coming for us at a most vulnerable time.
Gavin attempted to take the car out of auto-drive, pressing the buttons frantically and commanding it with voice controls. The car only responded with words. We didn’t control it. The car controlled us.
“Pedestrians within minimum safe distance,” the car said, acknowledging Gavin’s attempts to drive us out of danger.
No shit! We want to run the pedestrians over.
Tiny beads of sweat began forming at my hairline as I watched Gavin repeatedly engage and disengage various controls. Nothing would let us override the car’s safety features.
Gavin’s foot pressed on the accelerator trying to override the computer system, but the car still refused to budge. His foot slid off the pedal, and he quickly replaced it.
Damn these self-driving cars!
The engine red-lined with each attempt from Gavin’s override, but the brain of the car overruled Gavin’s actions with every rev of the motor. Gavin kept shaking his head as his finger slid up and down the dashboard. He glanced at me, his green eyes connecting with mine. I didn’t want to believe what I saw behind them so I turned to look out the window.
I gripped the console as I watched the twitches and spasms of the zombies’ movements closing in on us. They were everywhere…the grass, the sidewalk, the driveway. There was no mistaking the rotting, grey flesh that exposed the muscle and bone of the undead. They were something I’d run from countless times, but this time we had nowhere to run. The undead had us trapped. They would rip us to shreds in an instant.

Guest Post

Thank you so much for allowing me to stop by to talk about Zombie movies and my latest book, RecruitZ!

I think zombies are so much fun to watch on the big (and little) screen, and something that I really enjoy is humor paired with the creatures that are threatening to rip us to shreds! So on that note, my list of favorite zombie movies starts off with a few of the funny ones first! But I also love the more serious take on zombies, and the scared out of our mind type of outbreak that keeps us on the run! I guess I’m just a zombie movie addict! So here’s my list of favorite zombie flicks…

Shaun of the Dead
World War Z
Resident Evil
Warm Bodies
Night of the Living Dead

Okay, so now that you’ve heard what some of my favorite zombie movies are, I wanted to touch on my first zombie book that I’ve written—except that it’s not! I actually never thought I’d write a zombie book, but almost two years ago an idea popped into my head that I just had to work with.

I’d like to think that we would come up with a vaccine and slay the zombies before we all perished if a real life outbreak were to occur… (I’m generally a glass is half-full kind of girl) So that is where RecruitZ begins—after the outbreak. Only things aren’t as they appear and lives are still being taken. I get to delve into the world of conspiracies, criminal threats, and all sorts of fun things in the Afterworld Series, and I’ve loved every minute of it. Hope you can check out the first in the series, RecruitZ and thanks again for having me.

Author Interview

Thank you so much for having me! I’m so excited to share a bit about my latest series, The Afterworld! RecruitZ was a blast to write, and I’m loving Alibiz just as much!!

Do you watch Zombie movies?

I LOVE zombie movies! I’ve watched far more zombie movies than I’ve read zombie books. I probably shouldn’t mention that though! Oops!! Some of my favorite zombie flicks are Shaun of the Dead, Zombieland, and World War Z.

You generally write contemporary and paranormal romance. Is there any romance in The Afterworld Series?

I do generally write stories that are heavy on romance, but with the Afterworld Series the story doesn’t allow for it right away. It wouldn’t be natural. However, a glimmer of something does surface in RecruitZ and it will continue to flourish through the series. But it will definitely not be the main part of the story.

What is your favorite scene in RecruitZ?

I have so many! I loved the Zombie Pit scene and all the scenes where Rebekah kicks butt, which is often.

Thanks again for allowing me to stop by!

Character Interview with Rebekah from RecruitZ

Do doubt your sanity with everything you’ve uncovered, after your husband’s death?

I still doubt my sanity. When I saw my husband taken by those creatures—targeted by those creatures—I knew something was deadly wrong. The outbreak had been contained to a point. We had all been vaccinated… yet I watched my husband die by the very beings we were told we didn’t have to fear any longer.

When even my closest friends didn’t believe what I saw my world became very fragile… I’d say there were many times I doubted my sanity and with everything I’ve continued to uncover, it’s hard not to wonder who the crazy one is. I’d like to think it’s not me, but that’s probably up for debate by some.

When you met Preston in the bar, did you expect him to become so important in your life?

I saw something that night in his eyes. The same pain and torment I wake up with every single day, but I didn’t expect him to hold so many answers. No. I really didn’t expect it. I just thought he was a bartender that ran with the wrong crowd.

And I still can’t believe what we’ve discovered about the Afterworld, and who we’re having to fight just to stay alive. I thought being on the run during the outbreak was behind me, but it seems to be just the beginning.

Did you think you might not survive the outbreak?

There were many days I didn’t think Gavin and I would make it. Then there were days when I saw that glimmer of hope and knew we could survive. It was the best feeling in the world when Gavin and I got vaccinated, but it was also one of the worst as we realized how many loved ones we’d lost. It’s a tough thing to handle. But that’s why I need to find the answers to what’s really going on in the Afterworld.
